My Weightloss Story

In January 2008 I made the decision to lose weight once and for all. I started with the traditional low fat and low calorie diet and by April I had lost about 42 pounds. Every morning I ate a breakfast that consisted of oatmeal with no sugar and a banana. For lunch it was skinless plain chicken breast and a salad with a teaspoon of olive oil. Dinner was a heaping bowl of pasta or chili with lots of beans. I could never understand how anyone could eat a bowl of chili and not be hungry within minutes after eating. I would wind up eating 4 or 5 servings just to feel satisfied and full. When I wasn't eating I would be thinking about food all the time and fantasizing about the foods I would eat as soon as the diet was over.

My husband's doctor gave my husband a handout that suggested people who were overweight should reduce carbohydrates in order to lose weight. Of course at the time we did not want to accept this information. No potato with our meal or pasta or cereal/oatmeal for breakfast? What would we eat? What would we do? After my weight loss stalled I started researching low carb and by the end of April 2009 my husband and I started eating 30 grams or less of carbohydrates. We cut out all bread, pasta and starches and only ate meat, vegetables and fat.

It is almost a year since we have been eating this way and I have lost an additional 65 pounds. As of April 7, 2009 my weight is now 200 pounds and I only have 90 more pounds to lose before reaching my goal weight.

So what is different this time? Well first of all eliminating the pasta, bread, sugars from excessive fruit has eliminated all physical cravings for cookies, cakes, etc. I no longer fantasize about the foods I will eat when I am done losing weight. This is because I can still eat a juicy steak with butter at goal. I can still have an omelet (with the yolk) for breakfast and I don't have to worry about regaining my weight.
