I'm Back On Plan

Good news everyone I am now back on plan. Changing my eating once again after a year of doing it one way is really hard.

When you fall into a routine with your food it takes a lot of effort to change to another way of eating. It is almost like starting over again from day one.

So I am eating more veggies (leafy greens) and will add more spinach into my diet since it has a good omega 3:6 ratio. I hate having to add the fish oil since it is so expensive but I guess at this point it is necessary.

For breakfast this morning I had 1/4 cup blueberries, chicken strips cooked in coconut oil and spaghetti squash with tomato sauce.

I am trying to get my carbs to at least 30-50 a day (the higher range on the veggies the better). I think some people stay on 20 or less on the carbs too long.

Yes, 20 carbs is only supposed to be for the 1st two weeks, but even now some of the Atkins proponents have bumped that up to 30-40.

Ironically even at 20 or less on the carbs I was still losing pretty slowly. So
I think striving to get up to at least 50 a day is a good goal.

High CRP is caused by inflammation:

Meat and eggs are not inflammatory. It would be a mistake to drop them.

Here is what brought my CRP level down to .58.

Eliminate all vegetable oils. Watch your salad dressings and other hidden vegetable oils.
(Olive oil is not a vegetable oil so it is ok)
Eliminate fructose
Eliminate wheat and wheat products

Daily take the following:
2000 mg of Vitamin C with flavonoids
800 mg of Gamma Vitamin D
3000 mg of fish oil (get Costco brand. It is good but cheap)
Get your Vitamin D level up to 70. Vitamin D is necessary to get inflammation under control.
Start with 3000 units a day and get tested in 2 months.

Please tell your readers to help people with diabetes using carb restriction by signing the Metabolism Society's petition to the NIH. Here's the link:

That's the problem I did all of the above and take 1000 IU of Vitamin D a day. The fish oil wasn't at 3000 so I will up that but everything else I cut out and there CRP just keeps going higher. My docotr said I can't help you I don't know what to do. Which is really a great thing to hear when you are trying to get your health in order.

Read the article that I have linked to below. It says that the fat stored in your body contains the ratio of omega 6 to omega 3 that you were eating in the past. I suspect that your omega 6 consumption has been high in the past before you went on this diet.

Now that you are losing weight, the omega 6s that you have stored into your body are being released into your bloodstream. And those omega 6s are driving up your CRP.

The important thing now is to lose the weight and get rid of the omega 6s in your body. Eat what you have to eat in order to stay on the diet. So ignore your CRP now as it will be elevated until you reach your goal weight. When your weight stabilizes, then take a CRP test and work to get it down.

Unless you know for sure by testing, I would say that 1000 units of Vitamin D is not enough. Add 2000 more units a day.

The only thing you can do in the meantime is get more omega 3s in your diet by eating more fish and taking fish oil capsules.

Thanks for the feedback Jake. I was eating a lot of bread, pasta, etc before starting
the low carb so I am sure my fat has plenty of omega 6's stored in there.
I have never heard of the body storing omega 6's and releasing them as you lose weight.
I am going to really consider this and wait to retest the crp after I am done with the fat loss. Of course that will take a while since I have quite a bit to lose.

This study shows that you should increase your consumption of eggs not eliminate them.

"Eggs modulate the inflammatory response to carbohydrate restricted diets in overweight men."

"CONCLUSION: A CRD with daily intake of eggs decreased plasma CRP and increased plasma adiponectin compared to a CRD without eggs. These findings indicate that eggs make a significant contribution to the anti-inflammatory effects of CRD, possibly due to the presence of cholesterol, which increases HDL-C and to the antioxidant lutein which modulates certain inflammatory responses."

Another question to ask on your own is as well you might evaluate could be if you consume enough fish, various meat products and egg yolks that incorporate vitamin D. But if your diet includes these products using a relatively consistent basis, may very well not need to be concerned about supplementation. Some dairy, including some milk products are “fortified” with vitamin D.
