I just read this article about how the down turn in the economy may make those that are cash strapped gain weight because people are going to eat more foods high in saturated fat and sugar. I agree if you eat saturated fat you will gain weight, if you combine it with lots of pasta, potatoes and rice.
If you follow the Standard American Diet (SAD) you will consume 300 or more grams of carbohydrates a day based on your caloric intake. Simply cutting the number of carbohydrates in half is enough to start you on the road to losing weight not gaining.
Follow up:
The article does mention that ground beef is a great source of nutrition on a budget, but they counteract that by telling you to drink milk, eat carrots, stewed tomatoes and beans.
Since Atkins/Low Carb is high fat and moderate protein you will eat less and feel full longer. Thus is a win-win for your budget.
I wonder why no mention is made of Kale a great source of vitamins and also calcium. Leafy green vegetable are a better source of calcium than milk. Frozen broccoli, spinach and green beans are just as affordable and with the money you will save on milk they are great additions to your diet.
Eating at McDonalds is not any more cost saving than going to the store and buying the ingredients to cook a meal, plus you will have leftovers.
Getting rid of the soda can also help you save money as a gallon of water is a lot cheaper than a 2 liter of soda.
For even more savings on vegetable start your own garden this spring and with the money you save stock up on meat when it is on sale!
Tonight is the makeovers on The Biggest Loser. It should be good. Makeovers are always fun to watch.
